How To Remove Write Protection On A Micro SD Card

If you have a new micro SD card then you might have to remove the write protection. Write protection is something that most SD cards will come with whether they are standard size or micro cards. There are a few ways that you can remove this write protection from your micro SD card.

Using An Adaptor

The easiest way to remove write protection on a micro SD card is to use an SD card adaptor.

These adaptors will be the size of a standard SD card and allow you to insert the micro SD card into them. All you will need to do is insert your micro SD card into the adaptor. It is important at this point that you do not lock the micro SD card into the adaptor.

Leaving the adaptor unlock will generally overcome the write protection on the micro SD card. You can now insert the adaptor into your computer and hopefully the write protection will be removed.

Format With Windows

If the adaptor has not worked then you will need to consider formatting the card with Windows.

You will need to insert the adaptor or micro SD card into your computer. Click on the start menu and then right-click on computer. You should then select the manage option from the list provided.

The computer management window will open and you need to click on the disk management section under storage. All of the storage devices your computer currently has will be displayed. You should then right-click on the SD card and select the format option from the list.

A new screen will open and you should click the OK button. The computer will then format the SD card and remove the write protection.

Format With Mac OS X

If you are not using a Windows computer, you can also format the card with a Mac.

You will need to insert the adaptor into your computer and open the applications folder on your Mac. You need to scroll to the bottom of the folder to find the Utilities and open this.

You will then need to click on the disk utility option. A new window will open and you will be able to select the name of your SD card from the left panel. Once selected you should click on the tab labeled erase which is near the top of the window.

You should then select MS-DOS file system or FAT from the menu next to volume format. Once selected, you can click on the erase button near the bottom of the screen. The computer will then format the micro SD car and remove the write protection.

Write protection is something that you are likely to have when you buy a new micro SD card.

There are 2 methods that you can use to remove this protection with one being easier than the other. Using an adaptor will generally work, but if it does not then you will need to look at formatting the card.

It is important that you are careful when formatting the card and ensure that you select the correct device to format.
