Why You Need A Lipo Battery Bag:  A battery safe bag can save the day

A Lipo battery bag is something you need to consider having if you are using Lipo batteries. There are 2 types of Lipo battery bags and they are the charger bags and storage bags. A Lipo battery bag is essential to the correct storage and maintenance of your Lipo battery.

What Is A Lipo Battery

Before you look at getting a bag for your battery you need to know what these batteries are. A Lipo battery is used to power a range of electronics including drones. The chemicals used in the batteries differ from the ones used in your ordinary remote control battery. The name Lipo comes from the chemical composition of the battery which uses Lithium Polymer chemistry.

This chemistry offers a battery that has a high energy density and the capacity to power larger devices like drones. There are other battery types such as nickel cadmium batteries which could be used, but these batteries are considered to be older technology. They are not used very often because the Lipo battery offers greater power and a lighter weight.

Why You Need A Lipo Battery Bag

There are two reasons why you need to have a Lipo battery bag. The first is to safely charge your battery and the second is to safely store the battery. The bags used for these purposes will differ from each other, but they are generally considered a necessity when using these batteries. Some people recommend placing your Lipo battery into a safe bag and a fireproof box to ensure there is no risk of fire.

Using A Battery Bag When Charging

When you charge your Lipo battery it is important that you never leave the battery unsupervised. Many people make the mistake of leaving the battery unsupervised because they have done the same with other batteries in the past. However, there have been cases of fires started from a Lipo battery that was left unsupervised and this is something you will want to avoid.

There are other rules that you should follow when charging your Lipo battery including using a bag. It is important that if your battery is damaged in any way that you not charge it and dispose of it in the correct way. Swollen and damaged batteries present a larger fire risk than a healthy battery.

The battery should also be charged at 1C or less. The lipo battery charger you use should allow you to set the charging rate and it is best to have this at 1C even if it takes longer to charge. This charging rate will allow the battery to gain power at a steady and slow rate which keeps the chemicals stable.

If you do not have a fireproof location to charge your battery then you need to have a Lipo safe bag. These bags add an extra layer of protection to the charging process and will be fire resistant. The bag will usually be made with a polymer combination similar to fireproof suits and will come in a range of sizes to suit the battery you have. The bags will also have a closing mechanism to contain any fire that might start.

When you charge the battery you should also ensure that charger is set correctly for the number of cells your battery has. This is a feature you will find on many advanced chargers and may not be offered by the cheaper chargers. The charger you have should also have a balance changing system which monitors which cells are receiving power.

Using A Battery Bag For Safe Storage

When you store your battery you need to ensure that you are being safe. As the chemicals in the battery could become unstable you have to store the battery in a safe bag or fireproof box. There are a few best practices that you should keep in mind when storing the battery.

You should try and store your battery when it only has 40% to 50% charge. Leaving a fully charged battery for a prolonged period of time could be dangerous and should not be attempted. However, if you use the battery on a regular basis, every few days, then you could store it fully charged.

You have to store the battery in a fireproof location. It is possible to use the battery bag for charging as a storage container. It is also possible to buy battery bags specifically designed for the storage of batteries. These storage bags come in a range of sizes with some offers handles for easy transportation of your battery. However, all of these bags will be fireproof and are generally made with a combination of polymer and fiberglass.

The battery should always be stored at room temperature to maintain the stability of the chemicals. Storing your battery at higher temperature can cause a reaction within the battery which could cause a fire.

Additional Lipo Battery Safety

Using a battery bag is the best way to give yourself peace of mind when using Lipo batteries. These bags are your first line of defense should something happen to the battery. If there is a fire you will need to know what you should do and you need to know how to properly dispose of damaged of swollen batteries.

The fire that results from a damaged or overcharged Lipo battery is a chemical fire. This means that normal fire extinguishers will not work. You need to have a Class D fire extinguisher on hand when using and storing the battery. These fire extinguishers are designed to put out chemical fires and will harden over the chemicals to prevent any leaking.

If you have an old or damaged Lipo battery you need to dispose of it properly. The first step will be to discharge the battery until it is completely flat. There are a few methods you can use to discharge the battery including the discharger method, the light bulb method and the salt water method. Once the battery is completely discharged you can wrap the battery in paper and place in your household waste as they are landfill safe.

Even The Best Lipo Batteries Need Cautious Handling

Even the very best lipo batteries - those manufactured to the highest quality standards - still need to be handled with a lot of care. The internal chemistry of a LiPO battery - which is what gives it so much energy density - can also cause explosive reactions. The internal components of these batteries can react and cause an explosion if they are not handled right. And they can emit gases that can damage our lungs.

Luckily, most lipo batteries are manufactured to stringent quality requirements today. Today's batteries have monitoring circuitry that comes built into them. While your batteries are getting charged, this monitoring circuitry monitors each individual cell in a pack, keeps the cells from getting over charged, and breaks the circuit if any of the cells get too hot or get damaged in some way.

This monitoring circuitry and the amount of protection each pack comes with very significantly reduce the risk of using lipo batteries - but even then, you will want to handle these batteries with care. And you would always want to use a charging bag while charging lipo batteries.
